Hey Lykkers, have you ever dreamed of snorkeling in the Maldives, surrounded by crystal-clear waters and exotic marine life? We had the same dream, and we finally made it happen!
But before you pack your bags, let's take a deep dive into the real experience of snorkeling in this tropical paradise. Is it as breathtaking as everyone says? Let's find out together!
Snorkelling in the Maldives

The Maldives is an island nation in the Indian Ocean, made up of 26 atolls and over 1,200 islands. Unlike other snorkeling destinations where you can simply rent a car and drive to a beach, snorkeling here requires a bit more planning. There are two main ways to experience snorkeling in the Maldives:
1.Staying at a resort with a great house reef Many resorts in the Maldives have private islands with direct access to thriving reefs, making it easy to snorkel right from the shore. Some resorts also offer short boat trips to nearby snorkeling sites.
2.Joining a liveaboard snorkeling tourA liveaboard is a boat designed for multi-day snorkeling trips, allowing us to explore different reefs throughout the Maldives. This option gives the most variety but is harder to find compared to dive-focused tours.
The Maldives is famous for its diverse marine life, and during our trip, we encountered an incredible variety of sea creatures. Some of the highlights included:
• Colorful anemonefish playing in their anemones
• Giant clams with stunning patterns
• Blacktip and whitetip reef sharks gracefully swimming nearby
• Hawksbill turtles gliding through the reefs
• Massive schools of fusiliers shimmering in the sunlight
• Spotted eagle rays elegantly soaring through the water
• Whale sharks—the gentle giants of the sea
• Octopuses camouflaging themselves against the corals
With so much marine life, every snorkeling session felt like an underwater adventure!
While the marine life was spectacular, we couldn't ignore the heartbreaking reality of coral bleaching. Many reefs we visited had large patches of dead or dying corals due to rising sea temperatures. We even swam in waters that reached nearly 100°F (37°C)!
The coral reefs in the Maldives have suffered multiple bleaching events over the years, including a major one in 1998 and more recent ones in both the northern and southern regions. Without healthy corals, the entire marine ecosystem is at risk, and it's uncertain how the reefs will recover in the future.
If you're looking for a destination with healthier corals, we recommend considering Indonesia, where the reefs are still vibrant and full of life.
The Maldives has two main seasons, known as monsoons:
•Northeast Monsoon (Dry Season) From January to April, the weather is sunny with calm seas, making it the best time for snorkeling.
•Southwest Monsoon (Wet Season) From May to December, there's more rainfall, stronger winds, and lower visibility underwater.
We visited in late April, and although we had some good snorkeling days, there were also a few stormy ones. Based on our experience, March is the best month for clear skies, calm waters, and excellent visibility.
If you're flying from the U.S. or Europe, you'll land at Velana International Airport (MLE) in Malé, the capital of the Maldives. From there, you'll need to take either:
•A speedboat for nearby resorts
•A seaplane for distant resorts
•A domestic flight + boat transfer for remote islands
The travel process may seem complicated, but once you arrive, the stunning turquoise waters make it all worth it!
To make the most of your snorkeling adventure, we recommend bringing your own high-quality gear. Resorts may provide equipment, but it's often low-quality or uncomfortable. Here's what we suggest:
•A well-fitting mask to prevent fogging and leaks
•Comfortable fins to avoid blisters and cramps
•A snorkel with a purge valve for easy breathing
•A UV-protection rash guard to avoid sunburn
•Reef-safe sunscreen to protect both your skin and marine life
Trust us—having good gear can make or break your snorkeling experience!
So, after all our snorkeling adventures, do we think the Maldives is the ultimate snorkeling destination? The answer is yes and no.
Yes, because:
•The marine life is abundant and diverse.
•The water clarity is some of the best in the world.
•Snorkeling with whale sharks and eagle rays is an unforgettable experience.
No, because:
•Coral bleaching has significantly damaged many reefs.
•The Maldives is expensive compared to other snorkeling destinations.
•Liveaboard snorkeling trips are rare and difficult to book.
If you dream of snorkeling with amazing marine creatures, the Maldives is still a great option. However, if vibrant corals are a priority, we recommend exploring Indonesia or the Philippines instead.
Lykkers, if you're planning a snorkeling trip, the Maldives can be both an exciting and eye-opening experience. While the marine life is spectacular, the coral reefs are struggling, and we can only hope for their recovery in the years to come.
