Every winter, New Hampshire transforms into a magical wonderland with the arrival of the Ice Castles, a stunning architectural and artistic celebration of ice.
Nestled in North Woodstock, these temporary yet breathtaking creations captivate thousands of visitors, offering a one-of-a-kind experience that blends creativity, nature, and the chilly charm of winter.
The Ice Castles are nothing short of a marvel. Constructed from thousands of hand-grown icicles, the castles feature intricate towers, winding tunnels, majestic archways, and captivating caves. The process involves growing and harvesting icicles, carefully arranging them into place, and fortifying the formations with water from sprinklers.
By day, the icy walls shimmer with a soft glacial blue hue, creating a serene atmosphere. At night, embedded lights illuminate the structures in brilliant colors of pink, purple, and green, turning the castles into a dazzling fantasyland.
This year’s installation is particularly impressive, with over 25 million pounds of ice spread across two acres, making it one of the largest ever constructed. Jared Henningsen, vice president for operations, highlighted the immersive nature of the castles. “Once you step inside, you’re transported to a completely unique world,” he shared.
The New Hampshire Ice Castles aren’t just about admiring frozen beauty. Visitors can enjoy a snow tubing hill, an ice bar, and interactive elements like ice slides, igloos, and even ice thrones. Families explore the labyrinthine caves, while couples share intimate moments in secluded icy alcoves.
For Jessica Sullivan of Massachusetts, the castles became the perfect setting for a life-changing moment. Her boyfriend, Brian Jacques, proposed to her amid the stunning scenery, and the icy wonderland provided an unforgettable backdrop for their special day.
This magical experience isn’t confined to New Hampshire alone. Since the first Ice Castles were built in 2011, the company has expanded to locations in Utah, Minnesota, and two sites in Colorado. After facing challenges from last year’s mild winter, the early opening this season has been welcomed with enthusiasm.
Visitors from near and far have praised the Ice Castles for their breathtaking beauty and unique charm. Julia Jones, a resident of Massachusetts, described her first visit as unforgettable. “have never seen anything like this,” she said.
Whether marveling at the icy sculptures during the day or soaking in the colorful glow at night, the Ice Castles offer a truly magical experience. A visit here is not just a trip; it’s an unforgettable winter adventure that leaves everyone in awe!
