Hey Lykkers, are you ready for a beach getaway like no other? We couldn't wait to share our unforgettable adventure exploring some of New Zealand's most stunning beaches, where golden sands meet crystal-clear waters, and each coastline offers something unique.

From secluded coves to iconic surf spots, New Zealand's beaches are the perfect destination for beach lovers!

Explore Cathedral Cove

One of the most famous beaches in New Zealand is Cathedral Cove, located on the Coromandel Peninsula. We were immediately captivated by the stunning natural archway that frames the beach, a view that's often featured in travel photos. To reach Cathedral Cove, we took a beautiful 45-minute hike from the nearby Car Park through lush native forest, which made the beach all the more rewarding when we arrived.

Cathedral Cove is open year-round, and best of all, access to the beach is free! We were able to spend hours enjoying the secluded atmosphere, swimming in the clear waters, and exploring the dramatic rock formations. The hike is open from 6:00 AM to 9:00 PM, and we recommend visiting early in the morning or later in the evening to avoid the crowds.

Discover Piha Beach

Another must-see beach in New Zealand is Piha Beach, located on the rugged west coast of the Auckland Region. Known for its dramatic black sand and powerful surf, Piha Beach is a paradise for surfers, and we couldn't resist catching some waves ourselves. We spent the day lounging on the beach, taking in the views of the famous Lion Rock, which stands proudly over the shoreline.

Piha Beach is a great spot for surfing, and the surf schools nearby offer lessons for beginners. If you're interested in exploring the area, we recommend visiting Piha Surf School, which offers lessons starting from $50 NZD per person. The beach is open all day, every day, and we found the area particularly serene during the late afternoon, when the crowds had dispersed.

Practical Tips for Visiting New Zealand's Beaches

When planning your beach getaway in New Zealand, it's important to be prepared for the diverse weather conditions. Depending on the time of year, temperatures can range from 15°C to 25°C, so we made sure to bring sunscreen, a hat, and a light jacket for the cooler evenings. Be mindful of the tide times, as some beaches, including Cathedral Cove, are only accessible at low tide.

We also recommend renting a car to explore the beaches at your own pace. New Zealand's beaches are spread across the country, and having a car gives you the freedom to discover hidden gems off the beaten path. Car rental prices typically range from $30-50 NZD per day, depending on the type of vehicle.

Stay at The Boat Shed

For a special stay near Cathedral Cove, we highly recommend The BoatShed in Whitianga. Located just a short drive from the beach, this charming boutique hotel offers waterfront views, stylish rooms, and exceptional service. The hotel's peaceful atmosphere made it the perfect place to relax after a day of exploring.

The Boat Shed offers rooms starting at $200 NZD per night, with options for couples or families. The hotel also provides a cozy restaurant serving local delicacies, perfect for a post-beach dinner. It's an ideal base for exploring the Coromandel Peninsula and a short drive from other stunning beaches in the area.

Final Thoughts on New Zealand Beaches

New Zealand's beaches are some of the most beautiful in the world, offering everything from peaceful retreats to adventure-filled surf spots. Whether we were enjoying the iconic Cathedral Cove or the rugged beauty of Piha Beach, the experience was unforgettable. Lykkers, if you're looking for your next beach holiday, New Zealand should definitely be at the top of your list!
